There is nothing special about the books that are on the RC list other than the fine literary quality and the Robinsons had them in their personal library at the time. What is important is that you view history from biographies and original documents rather than just a historian's perspective. With that in mind, you can substitute any book or change the order to suit your tastes. Most people find the one-syllable books (George Washington, etc.) better farther down the list than towards the beginning where they are now. You could also use them as read-alouds.
We like gentler books than some on the RC list so prior to being able to read the RC list I recommend the Rod and Staff storybooks and the storybooks by author Shirley Hughes. We use them for recreational reading as well. Some of the books on this list are to spark a LOVE of reading and then they will feel confident to move on to the more complex books.
We enjoy using The Golden Book Encyclopedias as well as The Golden Book Bible for additional reading. We also use Uncle Arthur's Bedtime Stories for read aloud and additional reading. One of our favorite bibles is Uncle Arthur's The Bible Story. For the much younger child we use My Bible Friends. They also have a My Bible Friends DVD for when you need a break.
For convenience I have linked the books but most you can get at the library or inter-library loan (ILL).
We use the Minimalist Christian Homeschool Journal Book 1 and Book 2 to keep track of everything.
